On Wednesday February 20th, our 5th and 6th class girls travelled to Roundwood to take part in the County Wicklow Primary Schools final blitz. 16 teams took part in total, with 2 teams representing St.Joseph’s.

The “White” team showed excellent character and heart on the day and returned to Templerainey with silverware. Huge credit is due to the girls as they battled bravely throughout each game, coming from behind in 2 of their 3 games. In game 1 versus Moneytown, they came from 2 scores behind at half time to lead at the final whistle by 3 scores to 2. In game 2 they defeated Kilcoole on a scoreline of 5 scores to 1. The girls once more showed their character in the final game versus Newtown, winning out in the end by 3 scores to 2. It is a marvellous achievement by the girls, and is just reward for the effort and commitment they have shown since the start of the school year. Elizabeth Byrne, Abbie O’Reilly and Hannah Lee gave great foundation to the team. They blocked and cleared each ball that came their way. Zuzanna Dudek, Nathalie Byrne, Ciara Ward and Lauren Cosgrave worked tirelessly in midfield and contributed to each score that the sharp-eyed forwards Caoilfhinn Kavanagh, Caitlin Rochford and Sophie Mulligan tucked away.

The “Green” team showed tremendous grit and determination in each of their 3 games. They were extremely unlucky to return without a victory, as they were narrowly defeated in each game. The girls again worked very hard in each game and were beaten by St.Kevin’s of Greystones. In game 2 they were narrowly outdone by Kilmacanogue on a scoreline of 5 scores to 1. They showed great character and never gave up in their final game, in which they were beaten by St.Brigid’s of Greystones by 4 scores. Great credit is due to these girls, as many of them only took up Gaelic Football in recent months. The Green squad was as follows- Jessica Lynch, Isabel Keogh, Megan Smale, Megan Duffy, Safura Uysal, Erin Brauders, Courtney Brauders, Katie Garrett, Lisa Lin, Lauren Wynn.

Each girl that travelled to Roundwood on Wednesday was a credit to the school. They showed great pride, determination and never gave up. There is no doubt that with continued commitment and effort from the girls that further silverware will be brought back to Templerainey. The girls would like to thank Mr.Kavanagh, Ms.O’Sullivan, Ms.Kennedy, Mr.Doyle, Mr. Luby and the coaches from AGB for their help throughout the year.
